The New TV (in HD!)

Posted in hdtv, me, PS2, samsung, tv, video games, Xbox 360 on July 30, 2007 by spacewaffles

The old TV I bought back in 1996 when I was a high-school student working at McDonald’s has served me well over the years, but it was finally starting to die.

As many old TVs do, it was starting to develop a weird discoloration near the upper left hand corner of the screen. I wanted to replace it before it completely gave out on us, so it was off to Sears.

We ended up going with a Samsung 30″ CRT HDTV (1080i), since the flat ones don’t quite look as good to me, but have the advantage of being lighter and costing twice as much.

The first thing we hooked up was the Xbox 360, since it’s the only game system I have that is in HD and comes with a component cable.

I must say I was impressed with the fact that I could actually read the text on my 360 games now. The PS2 also looked significantly better, specifically Odin’s Sphere. It auto detected the TV was wide screen, which is very helpful since the game has such giant and beautiful high res sprites.

Once it was hooked up, all bets were off. The rest of the picking up of the house would have to wait.

The Simpsons Movie, a Quickie Review

Posted in movies, reviews, The Simpsons on July 30, 2007 by spacewaffles

I saw The Simpsons Movie on Friday night, and was pleasantly surprised.

I haven’t seen many of the newer episodes of the show, but the ones I have seen haven’t been very funny compared to the old ones. I was worried that the movie was going to be the same way.
The good news is, they were able to get back many of the old school writers of the show to do the movie, so the humor is back to the old style. Barney is a drunk, not a coffee addict.

The plot is way over the top craziness, as it should be. If you hear anyone criticize this movie for the plot being silly, be sure to ask if they’ve ever actually watched the show. It’s just an hour and a half long episode.
And that’s why it was good.

My good friends over at The Gigcast have just posted their 100th episode!

I have a quick little guest appearance in the episode, but I was pretty sleepy and couldn’t really think of much to say. Sorry about that guys. Next time I’ll drink some coffee before hand!

Overlord (Xbox 360)

Posted in Overlord, reviews, video games, Xbox 360 on July 19, 2007 by spacewaffles

Rather than re-typing it all out, here is the quickie review I posted over in the Nightgig forums:

I just got Overlord for the 360, and so far this game is great.
You play as a recently revived incarnate of evil who controls bands of minions (who remind me a lot of the Gremlins from the 80’s movie), who you can send to bash down doors, pillage, kill, or just pick up heavy stuff you don’t feel like lifting yourself. They can even sacrifice themselves to restore your health (don’t worry; you can always get more minions!).

You can even choose to be evil, or really evil.
For example, the second mission has you helping retrieve stolen food for a local village. To get the food back you have to be pretty evil; attacking a village of Halflings in a pretty awesomely done parody of Hobbiton. Once you find it, you can give it to the villagers and make them like you, or you can destroy the witnesses and keep it, making your minions that much more loyal.”

I now have the domain name of www.spacewaffles.com.
As you can see, there is nothing there yet.

Space Waffles is the newest addition to Nightgig, who have been friend of Random Pirate Comics for awhile now. They are the ones hooking me up with hosting, because they are rad like that.

We also have a forum, which you should check out.
